I'm just starting to hunt again and steel is pretty new to me. I figured out that I want to shoot Kent faststeel #3.
I have a dumb question----In a steel shell the same size as a lead one, does it have the same number of pellets,
just not as heavy as the lead load???

All #3 shot is the same dia regardless of Material. There are approx 153 steel pellets in an ounce of steel, 105 lead pellets in an ounce. The dia is .14". Ned S

It takes 4 pellets to kill a mallard and 5 pellets to kill Canadas regardless of the material. They just have to have enough energy to penetrate. Steel will not kill as far as lead but Tungsten steel will kill further than lead because it is denser than lead.. Using steel sizes bigger than normally used for lead and faster loads help to get the necessary killing energy and distances. I shoot steel up to and slight over 1900fps. Hey Ned----You must load your own then with 1900! If I shoot the faststeel I mentioned within 40 yrds. at the most----
most of the time at 25 to 35----should I go with a 3 in. or can I get away with 2 3/4 like I used to shoot??
