Hello,

New to Poquoson VA. Avid big game hunter and typically hunt Goose a few times per year. My property backs up to the marshes (private) and water. I hear a lot of shooting which has sparked my curiousity about duck hunting. Are there any locals that i can pick their brain and ask advise? Just want to make sure I understand all the non-regulatory do's and dont's for local waters and waterfowl community. Thanks for taking time to read.

Do I have everything I need to duck hunt in Virginia?

I have:
- Duck stamp
- Waterfowl conservation stamp
- HIP registration
- four boxes of Kent #2 steel in 2 3/4 length shells
- Remington 870 Wingmaster chambered in 2 3/4
- Pair of used neoprene waders
- Duck Commander Duck Picker call and a teal whistle
- a folding ground blind
- a folding chair
- a swiss army knife
- bottles of drinking water and snacks
- a Dove mojo
- telescopic fishing rod with a 8 inch wood dowel covered in treble hooks
- a crappy Seahawk 500 inflateable boat

What else do I need - (btw Not getting a dog... yet)

We live in Alaska, but planning on "wintering" near Mathews/Gloucester next winter (family connections there).

I have 2 black labs and am interested in hunt test/field trial training opportunities, areas to hike to stay in shape
for Alaska big game hunting, and waterfowl regulations. Regs in Alaska are pretty simple...10 duck bag limit,
for all species except for 1 Canvasback and the season starts Sept 1 so ducks are mostly "brown ducks".

Virginia jump shooting from canoe possible or illegal due to private ownership of shorelines?
Cost for typical duck hunting club?
How do you deal with brackish water rusting shotguns (I shoot an old Citori)?

Virginia is tough place to hunt waterfowl due to our laws and access to hunting areas
Regs are little more complex here, we essentially have 3 splits, a short 4 day season in October, generally last 2 weeks of November, and mid December through the end of January. Dont worry about bag limits, it seldom becomes a reason to stop hunting in VA, rare to shoot a limit.
It is legal to jump shoot from a canoe, however much of the water in this area is locked up with stationary blinds which means you cannot hunt with in 500 yards of them. Just pull virginia DGIF page and you can read all about it, if you put in some time you can find some open areas. Some wmas offer that type hunting where you dont have to worry about blinds, however they recieve a lot of pressue. That type of hunting is also poplar west of I95 were there are no blind laws.
Duck clubs, all I can say is good luck, it was cheaper for me to literary buy a 100 acres of marsh and woods and build impoundments than pay dues at some of the duck clubs around here. Best bet is to look at the deer clubs that have marsh or swamps on their property.
