My little sister just got this new pup and i have never seen a pup this smart. He just seems to be learning very fast and its really cool to see. She got him at 7 weeks old and 2 days later he was already retrieving the fake goose and bringing it straight back to us. When i introduced him to a real goose he went crazy and we had to pull him off of it, very exciting. I know this isnt "my" dog but she hunts with me all the time and wants to train him right, so we're working on finding some really good training guides for the pup, cant let one with those instincts go to waste. If anyone has any tips that would help her id love to hear em. thanks guys.

You'll find every pup that hits the stage is a rockstar along with being the best and brightest - as it should be. The owners however are sometimes suspect.

Read Sound Beginnings by Jackie Merten and then folllow with Fowlddawgs 1 and 2 as suggested.

The **Early Puppy Training Techniques* sticky is a good read also.

Good luck with the new pup. I strongly urge you to make contact with your local hunting retriever club (go to UKCdogs.com) and get involved. This will put you in the company of like minded people who also want a well trained retriever. With any luck you will find a couple of new friends who live close enough to form a training group. You'll meet folks who are a bit further down the dog training road and can help you through the rough patches and show you different techniques to teach a skill.

Chances are if you do join a club you enter a hunt test to see how your pup does. You catch the fever. Then you go from wanting a good meat dog to wanting a finished titled retriever anyone would be proud to hunt over.
