hey I am buying the spr tomorrow and have heard somethings about it rusting!?!?

should I save the headache and paint it right after i get it?

If so how do you go about painting a shotgun? what paint/primer/proper masking?

any help would be appreciated!

i'll take a pic today. i would recommend a nice brush for hand painting the reeds. i finally got the idea by the time i was finishing up with the green.

btw, there were pics of one in the thread. it may have been a baikal 153 but it's the same gun as yours.

i have previously painted guns that bot did and did not hold up well. best results have come as described in the link above (sticky at top of forum). the prep and using quality oil based paint are the two keys to the job standing up to a lot of abuse. i decided to repaint my old 870 after seeing how my baikal came out. in the pic, you can see that 870 still broke down after doing the background. the one on the bottom is complete, except for removing the masking on the butt pad and cleaning the bolt. i had to use spray paint for my reeds as well. no one carries the colors in flat or satin in the pot. i really like the krylon for ease of use and quick dry/recoat time.

here is the pic:

take a look at stumps thread for more info and pics.

I've found it fairly easy to cut the reeds out of masking tape and then spray the krylon satin river rock on them,

makes it harder to add detail to the reeds but looks pretty good!

I'll post it when I'm done.

cmw, thanks but i'm no pro with the paint can. i think the credit goes to both stump and the bamboo/pine needles. both made the job pretty easy. this is the first gun i've painted like that. previously i always used poster board to cut out stencils and went for either old school G.I. Joe camo or tiger stripes. the results were acceptable but nothing like stumps directions. if i had more time i'd love to paint more but i work 50-70 hrs a week in the snow seasons and a good bit during the summer as well.

Snowbird - You are a very modest, hard working guy. But I have seen a LOT of home-job camo painting by people following very detailed instrustions from the pros - and I will tell you truly that you are very talented. It is not easy to produce the effect you have on your guns, with everything so well balnced and blended seemlessly. Really exceptional!! What did you do to the bolt on the Baikal to knock down the shine?

Again - kudos man - you have skills!

Joe
