I had a vet tell me once to make sure you were buying USA made raw hide because in some other countries they will make them out of what ever dead (no matter how long dead) animal. Then if your dog picks up a bug from there county it's some times very hard to find because they vets here don't know what they are looking for.
Thats my 2 cents

My sister has worked as a vet tech for 8 years and says that they see at least one dog a week for a abstruction or infection caused by rawhide, pig ears or cow hoves. She said the problem is rawhide swells. Also when they process pigs at the slauter house they throw the ears in a big bin. They get around to preparing them when ever they get a chance. There are no FDA rules on pig ears for animal consumption. Also cow hoves splinter and cut up the animals intestants. She says that if you want to give your dog something to chew on get compressed rawhide. They are kind of exspensive but, cheaper than a $3000 vet bill. I can't swear she's right but, I perfer to weigh on the side of caution.

My wirehair gets a couple pigs ears a week with no problems, she drinks about a quart of water after each snack session!
Like what was said above about buying american made I was told the same thing but because foreign countries put preservatives into rawhide chews.
