Hi All,
For the Junior hunt that will take place on Feb 6 and 7, does anyone know which wildlife area/Refuge in California are open for these waterfowl hunts ? I know Grizzly Island is one of them.
Thanks,

Fed 6th and 7th are actually termed "Youth Hunts". Youth hunts occur out of the normal season and are open to hunter age 15 and under. Junior hunts occur within a regular season and are open to hunter age 16 and under. So if a hunter is 16 they can't hunt on Feb 6th and 7th. The difference is to make it fair for hunters with in-season birthdays pretty much. Most refuges are open on one or both of the days, up here in Humboldt they also open up brant season for the weekend.

I've been hunting the junior hunts for 5 years with my boys. All of the refuges in the State are open except for Sutter and Howard Slough. I would recommend putting in a 5 card pick for that weekend, all though you can walk on pretty much any refuge that weekend, Especially Sun.

Also, If you go to the CWA website, they usually have a list of private clubs that offer their clubs to the junior hunters at no or little cost. Some are just hunts, some offer a great deal of stuff, Food, lodging, the whole bit.

If you need any other help, feel free to P.M. me.

From the DFG website for Saturday:

"Youth waterfowl hunt in Southern California, Southern San Joaquin Valley and Balance
of State zones. Bear Creek, China Island, Colusa, Delevan, Freitas Boat North, Freitas Boat
South, Gadwall, Gray Lodge, Grizzly Island, Kern, Kesterson, Little Dry Creek, Llano Seco,
Los Banos, Mendota, Merced, Sacramento, Salt Slough, San Jacinto, San Luis, Stone Lakes,
Volta, Wister, Yolo Bypass"

If you want to get him into some possible geese, don't forget the Special Delta hunt. It might be hit or miss, but the DFG guys there are really helpful on the junior hunt. PM me if you want more info.

If any of you will be going to the ISE show find the Relentless 365 booth they are giving away two guided Jr. hunts on a private club the kids will also receive a video of their hunt a free subscription to the magazine and an edge duck call. I was also told that they can enter on the Relentless 365 website after the 14th. Sounds like a great opportunity to me.

Me and my brother almost always had incredible post season junior hunts in Los Banos. We would pretty much get limits Saturday and Sunday. Never hunted up north but I could imagine the junior hunts would be awesome. I think all the Refuges are open but don't quote me on that. Good luck with getting some birds.

 I talked to a refuge manager and he said that all refuges open to hunting will be honoring the youth hunt days.

Rhyan, find out how to enter into the lottery(s) in the Los Banos area refuges and if you're drawn I'll take you. Los Banos would be my #1 choice since I know my way around the refuge so well. Not that I said I killed a lot of ducks there this year, I said I know my way around it.

Bill

If anybody else is willing to take out a junior hunter and does not have somebody, post you name here and hopefully juniors who need a hunter to take them can connect with you.

So I got more info on the hunt being given away from Relentless 365. If you guys have a junior I would sign them up this hunt will be taking place in the Butte sink. The guys from edge calls were telling me that this may be a once in a life time hunt for the kids that win. If you have not you need to sign up your junior at relentless365.com I just wish I had a junior hunter I could sign up.
