yeah, for the most part

the problem is that the current hog market right now is atrocious

$6/bushel corn, plus very low prices for hogs now doesnt equate to a rosy situation, not to mention that slaughter numbers are at a record high, and have been for about a year

i met the Dr. Hammer mentioned in the article, about 3 weeks ago. we talked to him and his wife about the same issues he mentions.

they did mess up w/ pat halbur's information. he's the head of the food animal production department at iowa state vet school

Who would have thunk you could go to State and be in such high demand

Engineers and vets are always in high demand.
First of all it was a joke and 2nd of all not always true... there are plenty of Engineers, Bankers, Builders that are not in too high demand right now.

I know it was a joke. Engineers (certain disciplines) are in great demand right now. With the bio-fuels industry infrastructure being developed and nuclear industry making a comeback, we are constantly looking for people to meet demand. Luckily, my company follows more along the lines of the global economy rather than just the one here in the US. The upside to a weak dollar is a ton of European companies want to procure process equipment through us, because it is much cheaper for them considering they use the Euro. I think the exchange rate is something like 1US$=1.6Euro. Also makes our debt much cheaper to pay off.

Taken from the link........

"When they have that kind of debt, they go to the highest bidder," said Dr. Pat Halbur, chair of the veterinary department at Iowa State University. But Dr. Halbur said many of these grads don't realize they can make a good living in the country, noting that the average vet pay in a small Midwestern town is $75,000, compared to $65,000 in a bigger city."

QP, you could have saved a $100,000 and made more money being a telephone man.

keep in mind that is 75000 w/ a very low cost of living, and that average includes people who do predominately companion animal work, which traditionally pays less. however you can do well in that field if you own the hospital and receive the income from the retail sales in the hospital.
