killed my first banded duck nearly 20 years ago(Dec 18, 1988), exactly 10 years before my son was born. Just happened to be a double banded drake wearing a $100 Reward band. Had many close encounters with other double banded birds since but haven't sealed the deal on another yet, just lots and lots of single bands!

I have hunted for about 8 years and have never shot a banded duck, my nephew went on his first duck hunt this season and has shot 2 banded mallards, 1 is a $100 and 1 is a $25.

Shot a double banded black duck in Canada with 100 dollar reward band. Funny thing is that the guy I was with had just said it would be nice if that bird had a reward band.

shot a black with a double band yesterday for $100. But I was thinking about the average number of ducks shot, to the number of bands retieved. In the years I have gotten bands I've shot 30-35 bird on average some years did'nt reach that total but years combined (5) I've gotten 3 bands only 1 reward band any other estimates

Took my brother out this morning, and he got a double banded drake mallard-$50. His first banded bird and its a money bird on top of it.
Even better, he's been working out of the area this year and only has shot 4 birds this season, counting the two this morning. Pretty good ratio!!!! :uhhaa:

the 1st duck my brother ever shot was a double banded mallard drake with a $50 reward band, and to top that off the 1st goose he ever shot was banded as well all in his 1st season of waterfowling, to say the least he has good band mojo

My buddy shot a banded Surf Scoter on the last day of the season this year $100. It was his first band ever. I have been hunting ducks for 21 years this season and have only shot 3 banded birds none with reward. 1 Mallard, 1 Honker, and 1 Snow. I shoot over 100 ducks/geese a year. I guess some guys have all the luck. Oh well i'll just keep shooting thats the only way i'll get another.

I shot a $100 banded dove in SW ohio about five years ago. It was double banded, siver USFW band and a blue ODOW band. The blue band was the reward.

Why would someone not try and call a band in. Usually i call as soon as i get home or even in the field. Never thought of waiting cause I want to get my certificate right away and find out all the info i can on it.

well this was my first year out n i only shot a mallard hen. but my bro-in-law has been hunting for about idk idd say 4 or 5 years maybe more but he hasnt got a banded bird ever n i dont c y becuz everyday we go out we c 1000s of birds n sumtime we get groups of 30-40 birds to um in but idk one of those birds outta that group may not get shot so ya. thing that suxs is i have a pump action n its hard for me to shoot n pump shoot n pump im to slow. i cn usually only get one shot off.

Anyone know how many birds that are banded get the reward bands and specifically what they are used for? I would assume studies and things like that but does anyone know of other reasons for the reward?

on your ? about how many get rewards. Last sept. I volunteered to help band birds at miller island in so. oregon. We caught them at night from boats with a salmon net(tons of fun). They told us in advance that we needed to catch at least 7 mature mallards to put reward bands on, the rest of any species would get a regular band. In all we banded 134 ducks of mixed species 7 got $100 reward bands, and 6 immature honkers.

I shot a $100 reward greenhead about two or three years ago. He had been sitting in there when we got in the swamp. I heard him as we were putting out decoys. It was the last day of the season and it was an evening hunt. I knew there were ducks roosting in there so we got in there and when it was time, it looked like mosquitoes in there! In 5 minutes, me and my brother both got our limits, including the one that was already talking to us when we got in there. I shot him and low and behold....double banded $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. That was one of the most memorable hunts I have ever been on.

I don't have THAT many, but there is a story for each one that I do have.
