I know there is a forum for it, but figured i'd ask some people in my state. I want the opinion on ammo, I am debatin the new hevi-metal with blackcloud and kent. I have shot kent for years but lately have seen too many birds somehow get away with half their feathers missin.

This year i have shot Kent 3" 3's 1 1/4 oz. and they where by far my best load. I have also tried Black cloud 3 1/2 2's and 4's 1 1/2 oz. the fours where worthless and the twos shot ok. I just picked up a box of Hevi- metal 3 1/2 3's 1 1/2 oz. ill let you know how they shoot when i get back from my trip this week. I'm sure you already know, you need to get out there and pattern your gun each gun patterns different and each shooter has there favorites. Also try Carlsons choke tubes i switched from kicks high flyer .

Here we go I gonna let the cat out of the Bag...... 3" or 3' 1/2 Winchester Xpert High Volicity 1550 fps in BB's out of Patternmaster Choke Tube. There is no need to waste all that money on other brands. I learned many seasons ago to find one brand of shell (the speed of the shell is the most importance) this way your leads will be forever in your mind. If you go buy a different box of shells every time you go to the field........ 1300fps, 1425fps, 1550fps, 1625fps...... you are wasting time and money. Your leads change every time you buy a different speed shell. With all of that said BB's @1550fps out of tight choke will kill birds stone dead :hammer: . When I say birds I mean teal, woodducks, mallards, ringers, reds,Bbills, sholvers, sea ducks, canada geese, snows, swans and any thing else you can think of. Knowing your gun and your ablity to shoot is key to the hole.......thing, if you cant shot, the $40 a box shells are not gonna kill them on their own. Yes these shells will [email protected] sure do the job but why buy 1 box when you can buy 2 or 3 of the other at the same $.Hey look at it this way .. if your gonna miss, miss with the cheap stuff. this dang sport cost enough as it is already. And that my friends is all i have to say about that.

I completely agree with you, I would much rather shoot affordable steel shells than a box of high dollar shells. I just want to be able to eliminate havin to put that second round or sometimes even third round into one bird when its basically over a dollar a shot. I think my best bet is to just gather up all the different shells and put them on the board, but I am still open on any opinions.

This is very intersting to me. At my camp we actually cut open five different rounds and were comparing the insides. I have been shooting Kent Fasteel #2 3.5" with the fastest FPS rating available. Although, IMHO, you sacrifice a few pellets with the faster round, the birds fall for me better with the faster round. Probably because I don't lead properly. The cut open Kent pellets were most uniform and have always chambered for me. Bass Pro has Kent for $18.99 - to me reasonable...

The Black Cloud rounds are mostly simple round steel pellets with a few "ridged" pellets mixed in. The wadding was substantially more restrictive (thicker) in those rounds too. The Federal round we cut open had different sized pellets in it - I don't know if that is good or bad. I agree with the previous post too - most blame is really on the shooter for misses. I have hunted with a great shotgunner who swears by improved choke tubes for all duck hunting, and he kills just as many birds as I do with my modified choke. The most impressive round we cut were Winchester Supreme BB, but I can't afford $3.89 per round!! I do have a few in my bag in case I get a shot at my swan this year...

soggy, Did you happen to cut open an Expert? i did and they were nasty, not only were they different size a lot of them weren't even round some were flattened and oval. by the way for the swan i used win. drylock BBB to kill mine this year. I had hevi shot 1 1/2oz #2s and they wouldn't even sweat em.

We did cut open an expert round - and I agree with you - but I wonder if the shape really makes that big of a difference. Bismuth and other expensive alternatives, from what I have seen, have random shapes - some even squared off... I am a rookie at ballistics, but it just seems that the more consistent shot should produce a more consistent pattern...

I'm with ya on that one, i patterned some experts and they cut the paper instead of going straight through. the kents on the other hand were vary consistent shot and patterned well and 2 to 3 dollars more a box is worth it to me.

in my experience, nothing comes close to hi brass lead 5's or 6's...hell, what's all this ooplah about 3" or, god forbid 3.5"...a good ol' hi brass 2 & 3/4" lead number 5 will kill anything that flies...now you might have some splannin' to do, but that's your problem! shoot 'em in the lips!

Winchester expert steel 3" #3 is the best duck load for me and MY GUN. I have shot a host of different brands and end up just as happy with those $11 a box shells. I can kill ducks with any shell and xpert is a whole lot easier on my wallet.
