BUTT!!!!
I have read alot about Haydel`s DR-85 and how bad it stinks. Well I had to find out for myself. So on the last trip to BPS I opened up the package and gave it a whiff. I must have looked like a man that had turned to stone after looking into the eyes of Mudusa. For the love of all thats good..WHAT are they doing to those calls to get them to stink that way? Actually, I don`t want to know. And no I DIDN`T blow the thing. I dropped it in the floor and ran for my life like a little girl.

If you guys are using them, how do you stomach it. Even if it was a magical call that pulled ducks from the heavens I coudn`t do it. Hat`s off to you guys, you a better man than I

My brother got a haydels Red leg mallard call and it stunk from the beginning and still isn't much better a few years later....... But out hunting I found the same call in the mud that must have been there for awhile, so I took it home and cleaned it and it doesn't smell at all. So I guess the trick is to drop it in the mud and leave it there for a couple months then it should be good! :rofl:

But I have no clue why they smell like that in the beginning! Its gross!

Its the polymer or packaging they use. I've had other plastic stuff that has smelled the same. If you leave it out of the package for a week the smell goes away. Thats how people blow these things :thumbsup:

P.S. All of the Haydels calls smell like this.

they dont smell much worse than the marsh we hunt in around here. Our noses are just used to that kinda smell

I have one and it stinks something awful. I have a super sniffer and it smells like old cat crap. Whatever though it's an alright call.

I love my Redlegs, but you are absolutely right about the smell. :rofl: I thought it was just me!! I've never heard anybody else mention this problem. It smelled like puke! It cleared up after a while though.

Spray OFF bug spray on the calls and i assure you the aweful taste will outweight your sense of smell

LOL...I cant believe I found this thread! All this time I thought it was just me. I have the Haydel spec call and I dont remember the numbers on it but its one of those little clear calls. Its stinks so bad that I ended up just stickin it in my own butt so that at least I could trick my mind into thinking it was my own ass I was smellin when I put it to my lips. Of course after that it tasted as bad as it smelled. :rofl:

Actually almost three years later I still cant open the drawer I put that call in. I use a Basin obomination for specs now.
So many people told me that the best spec call you could buy costs less then $14.00 and that was a Haydels. Now I think its just a waterfowlers joke people play on the newbies.

glad it was not just me... the wife says the same thing about here Pink DR-85... but it still sounds great and will be on her lanyard...

have you boys had some stabilized calls that smelled funny...? I have a few that are just over powering with stink... you could almost get high off of them... :biggrin:

DR-85's are made in Mexico and smuggled across the border stuffed in ones body cavity...not really. Ive got a coupla old ones I bought off of EBay from old stock a few years ago...neither have any smell at all and I ALWAYS have one in my pocket when hunting dux...geese too :thumbsup:

I have a dirty rice. I was thinking someone stuck in a pile of cat crap before they packaged it. I am glad to hear it isn't me. I like the call though, it has a special sound that I can use for my little trick when nothing else works.

:rofl: A friend I hunt with has one and it always helps me to tell which way the wind is blowing. God if he gets in the wrong direction it makes me want to throw up. We laugh are butts off everytime he calls in a bunch. "Another victim of the stinker" :rofl:

I've started to enjoy the smell of the DR-85. Its really funny when you find someone who hasn't smelled on yet and you finally convince him to smell the barrel of your call.

Just found out for myself that they smell like 10 day old poop. Bought a cheap Timber Cutter off of ebay that was new. Got the thing and just about got it to my lips to try it out and about gagged. I have a friend who really wants a new call and he is going to buy it from me. What a good friend I am!
