need some advise.

1 Son and I are going Snow goose hunting. Have to be prepared for whatever shots come our way so I suppose that will be 40-60 yards shots? looking to buy a case of shells that hopefully we will shoot up but also then be able to pick up empties and reload. What would be the best factory load to use that would result in a good case to reload I have RSI 3 inch wads so I would be useing those to reload with..

2- I have a super Black Eagle factory chokes. Can shoot steel up and through the modified choke. Do you think that would be good or would people recommend a carlson or some other long range tighter choke?

Thanks looking for feedback and opinions

Seems like alot of people like Kent Fasteel which you should be able to reload with the Cheddite recepies from RSI. Rogers has their 1 1/4 oz. loads for $119 per case. I'd think the #1's would be pretty good, if the shots were really far out than you might want to go with BB's. We shoot Ross' and Specs as much as anything and they aren't much bigger than a large northern mallard. You guys in the midwest I assume get larger snows than we do. Try them out in your modified, should be good to 50 but you never know. Lots of guys like the Terror chokes for long range shooting.

I would suspect the snows would be shot at 50-60 yds. I use the RSI 3" 1 1/16 oz loads running 1700 to 1730 fps with an extended Imp mod or Terror choke .675 constriction. When it's windy I use the 1 3/16" RSI 3" recipes with steel BB's, same chokes. RSI 1 1/8 oz loads would work fine at around 1600 to 1635 altho I have never shot them. The 3" 1 1/16 oz loads take a 2 3/4" RSI shotcup, the 1 3/16 and 1 1/8 take the 3" shotcup which you have. Yes, I would call Shane at Carlson, tell him the application and I am sure he will give you a choke that works. You need 37 fairly evenly pellets in the circle at 60 yds to kill a snow at 60 yds with 4 pellets. 3 pellets or 28 pellets in the circle will bring them down. Good Luck, 1's at 1550 fps will penetrate to kill to 58.5 yds, BB's to 65 yds. 1's at 1600 fps to 60 yds, BB's to 67 yds, 1's at 1700 fps to 62 yds, BB's to 70 yds. I like 1's at 1730 fps using RSI 88 for this task. Good luck, Ned S the young 81 yr old.

Here's the bottom line, I don't care if you shoot a 10ga,12ga 20ga ect. If you want to KILL Snows buy HEVI SHOT #2 go0se loads.OR Remington HD..... I've seen it time and time again in SD Spring Snow Goose Hunts
Good Luck

I''ll take steel @ 1700 fps all day long over slow shooting hevi shot. Longer leads at further distances throws a guy off. Besides I love hitting feathers with bb @ 1700 fps it makes a great sound.

I agree with 43x if you want to kill geese at thos distances i would go with Hevi shot, i would rather take a load going 1400-1500 FPS that stones them out to 80 yards then a fast load going 1800FPS that cripples just as many birds as it kills, now if your shots are 40-50 yards then steel will cut it, and you might want to look into the extended range PM, you mite spend a little more but alot of ppl dont take into consideration how many shots are fired trying to kill cripples, and at 60 yards it is hard for any steel load to take a goose down at that range. Had 2 specks come in today betwwen 50-60 yards two shots where fired, and two birds fell stone dead. Hevi shot goose #2's at 1400FPS

+1 for #2 tungsten. Just remember that even the fast steel loads will be traveling slower with less energy than tungsten loads at the point of impact (40-60 yards)...at least when the most typically recommended load combinations are used. In my experience, the only place fast steel leads are shorter is when the birds are right in your face.

startin to see it with honkers, when we first started killing them between 15-40 yards a group of 10 would come in and we get them all, now that there gettin skiddish and stayin between 40-60 yards the only guys that are killin them are the guys shooting hevi shot, sorry guys, its to the point that the owner wont even let you go out unless you have hevi shot, or tungsten

And no where near as deadly as the slower hevier loads
And you have never shot steel 1's', B's or BB's at 1730 fps. Ned S who is shooting steel 1's at 1863 fps, 10,527 psi and uses Hevi and lead 2's on Sandhill Cranes, lead 2's at 1500 fps using a clone of the Black Cloud shot cup.

Right, if you work at it a little you can kill them with a BB gun. I would shoot what ever you are use to shooting. I would go with Kent Fasteel or All Purpose 3" #1,2, or BB

Where do I get these 1700 fps loads?

Are they comercialy available?
Sporting Ammo..........but be prepared to drop some coin on a good choke !!! The faster stuff is tough to pattern.
Really? Name 5 loads you have patterned that are in the 1700 fps range. Feel free to post the numbers and ranges along with the numbers on factory chokes and the numbers on all the "High dollar" chokes you have tried these loads in.

Anyone wanna bet mouthpiece cant put his money where his mouth is.

My set up: SBE II, Federal blue box 3" 1.25 oz. BB and Win. Expert 3" 1.25 oz. #1. Top it all off with a Briley IM choke.

The Briley IM gave me consistent 91% patterns in a 30 inch circle at 40 yds. The #1's were almost as impressive. I also had a long range pattern master and it really wasn't even close. It gave patterns in the low 80 percentile with big holes in the spread. That was a deal-breaker for me. The pattern was still workable, but nowhere near as even as the Briley. I can consistently take snows to around 50 yds. with this set up, past 50 yds. I usually let them pass.

I know Pattern Master has a pretty loyal following, but I put more faith in what I see and Briley's chokes have sure left and good impression on me.

With steel 1's at 1863 fps I am getting 65% patterns 68/104 at 50 yds no holes. It takes only 35 pellets fairly evenly dispersed in the pattern circle to put 5 pellets in a lesser, a 12 lb greater requires 23 pellets to do the same. I will be shooting this 1863 fps load in the morning. Ned S the young 81 yr old

I have tried alot of chokes , and i have the best luck with the patternmaster .I shoot rem, 1260 fps 2,s.. I tried the faster shells , and the patternmaster did not do well. I know speed is better, but at 40 yds, 1260 fps does ok for me.I shoot only 1 3/4 oz rem now.I cant consistantly hit things at over 50 yds, so i dont think the faster shells would help me.
