i am thinking about getting off the East Coast here in North Carolina and moving back to the Midwest, i lived in Minnesota for 15 years, but that is way to cold for my wife, the Schools Suck here
i have a 2 year old and a 3 month old and want them to go to good schools,i wanted to know how are the Schools in South Dakota? and how is the Hunting in General, like upland, trukey, ducks and Deer?
I want my boys to grow up hunting fishing and just being in the outdoors, and also my wife loves to hunt just like me
Thanks Lenny

I am a teacher in south dakota. Schools are very good according to national test scores. Most likely smaller classes hence more attention to students. I hunt everything you listed.
It's just as cold or colder here in SD than minnesota. We actually have more wind. Many days of -20 to -25 below windchill this winter.
Fewer people and more space here. Although Sioux Falls is turning into a major city with too many problems. If we could get rid of that city SD it would be perfect!

I live over near Rapid City, Ellsworth AFB to be exact. Very windy, very cold, although today it is supposed to be 60. I hunt duck, geese, deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant, and fish in the many lakes around here. The only thing I do not like about South Dakota is the price of housing. I do not understand why a house that would cost $100,000 in other places has to cost $175,000 + here. After all, there is not a whole hell of a lot up here. Rapid City is a good sized city, we get Cabelas this year (WOOT WOOT!!), but still the price of houses disgusts me. With that said I do plan to retire from the USAF in the next 1-4 years and do plan on staying here.

Originally from MI but my girlfriend's family is here and she wants to stay, so...

Anyway, if you move up here and move to the west side of the state shoot me a PM. If you move to the east side I am sure the folks on the boards from that side won't mind ya shooting them a PM eother. NOTE: Once you leave Mitchell, SD and head west toward Rapid City there is not much in between. Pierre (State Capital) is the major city in the middle and it ain't that big. The only McDonalds from the time you leave Mitchell is located in Rapid City, 250 miles west, LOL.

I just transferred to Watertown, didn;t have a choice  I don't mind the area, really. It is nice, different than what I am used to tho. Grew up in Kentucky and North Carolina. So did the wife. She hates it here. Says its too cold and not enough big towns for her to go shopping in. Oh well, saves me money. I think if we had not got the forced transfer we would probably still be in the North Carolina area. We were looking to move from Durham for the same reasons, Schools, we wanted to stay in NC and had thought about some of the outlying towns around Hickory/Hildebrand. Far enough away from all the madness but still close enough to the big cities and especially closer to good medical care. Wife needs those. But since we have no choice we trying to make the best of it. The people here are great, really nice. Only been here 3 months, didn't have time to hunt yet but looking forward to the next season and some time off.

I moved to mobridge from watertown where i have lived for my whole life. My little brother lives out in mooresville ,nc. And he does not like it out there for the same reasons you like it. To warm no ice fishing or walleyes just bass, to big, and no where to hunt. Pic a directoin and you will find fishing and hunting around watertown.

You need to look at the housing other places than rapid city it is really cheap compared to anywhere else. I just bought a house in mobridge and it would be double what i paid other states. Mobridge is not big but i can look out my window and see lake oahe and i will take that over mcdonalds any day.

don't get me wrong. I like the area and the few people that we have met. i guess that is what makes it tough on the wife, I get to see and talk to people all day and her day consists of talking to a 5 and 3 year old. She hasn't made any friends yet and with her being a shy it makes it hard for her to. I guess the thing we miss the most about NC was how close it was to alot of mountains, great views, and the smokey mountain park. The last 2 years we would take the kids camping at least once a month, they loved it. Just sit back and do nothing. I myself am looking for a little more solitude. Just maybe not too much

If you want to go camping there are so many nice campgrounds around watertown. if you want to see some hills go west out ot the black hills or if you want real mountains go to montana or wyoming and camp. when i think about it when i come back home to watertown it is to big for me i like the smaller town more every day i live here. You need to go ice fish and bring home dome walleye that would make your wife happy
