I moved back to the area a few years ago and now live a stones through from the Mead (4 miles). I am very eager to get into duck/goose hunting but unfortunately my experience extends only to whitetails. I really want to get into the sport but do not really know where to go, what to do or what I will need. I am hoping I can hook up with someone that can show me the ropes. I have a 5 1/2 month yellow lab who is doing great. He is the best dog I have ever worked with although I need some help putting him on some birds. If anyone is willing to take a new guy under their wing I would certainly appreciate it. The bottom line is my dog knows his job, now I have to figure out mine. Please drop an email if you would like to share. [email protected] Thanks all

nsimonis,
Sorry I didn't welcome you to the site, but here's your official "how do you do?" I unfortunately don't live too close to you, otherwise I'd take you up on a hunt. I hope you and your pup get some shooting in, and that you find a partner close by. I tell you what, with the DNR trying their best to knock over traditional deer hunting it should be easier to find a fellow waterfowl hunter near you. Be safe, have fun, and shoot the lips off them ducks! Pete

Thanks for the welcome Pete-Pec. I haven't run into many people that hunt this area so I think I will be flying solo. I got some maps of the Mead and plan to do some scouting in the upcoming weeks to get an idea on where to go. Deer hunting is something I know because I grew up doing it but trying to figure out bird hunting is tough if you have no experience. Hopefully I can hook up with someone that is willing to share their passion for ducks and dogs.

From what ive heard the mead is really dry this year and if the usual crowd is out there its really not so good. I have some buddies at school who are from the area and i have fished out in the cranberry bogs several times this summer, the geese where in there big time. Also my buddies said the ducks are thick to the probelm is gettin persion to hunt em. Try that, its all i got for ya

I am looking to do some early season duck hunting in Wisconsin, but have never been in the area before. I was thinking about the Stevens Point or Janesville area. My grandparents live in the Racine area so both of those are fairly close to where I would be staying. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to meet up for a hunt I could work a trade if anyone wants to hunt in Ky or TN.

nsimonis,

Went to school at UWSP and know the area well. Just moved back myself and live in Waupaca about 1/2 hour east of Point. Always looking for new people to hunt with. I don't have room for the opener but after that I'm open. Just let me know if you want to get together. BlackLab
