Target...oldsquaw

Last year we found a spot while traveling that was loaded with oldsquaw. This next year we are planning a trip to target them. I am assuming they will decoy in to our mixed bag of decoys, broads, redheads, cans, some whistlers and buffies. You all think i should purchase some oldsquaw dekes as well? Any thing else different from hunting any other diver?

crew we are going to try and get them up on superior, we found a little spot on the north (canadian) side where a buddy has a cabin. should be a great trip.
thank guys! when given the chance they will decoy nice.... the best is when they go zipping but with the wind, freeze those wings opened turning back into the wind over the decoys... my opinion.

when you see his wings lock you know you got him!

decoys? the past few season just sportplasts... mine do get shot up! am looking forward to see what GHG old squaw will look like also.

thanks,

jeff

Hands down my fovorite duck to hunt above all others is the Old Squaws. I love seeing a group of them steaming in with their gear down. Those pictures are fantastic to say the least. PLEASE Have calendars made so i can see that every day.
thank you! a few more of what i think are "cool" shots...

late last season a good slug of squaw showed up on the west end of long island..

i took a bunch of old pintail decoys(10 to be exact)..some flat black and white paint and 2 hours..and turned them into squaw decoys..

set them to the side of a mixed bluebills/buffies set and we shot 2 man limit the next morning..

good luck
I am starting to vibrate with anticipation

Is that some inside info on the GHGs. I really hope they do make them because the last sportplasts I got were peeling paint first trip out.
Have you had similar issues with any of your sportplasts longtails?
Oh and, of course, I should mention....Great pics Jeff.
I think longtails will be my favorite, for the next couple of seasons anyway.
I want an oldsquaw so bad and Lake Michigan is supposed to have a good population maybe ill try and get 1 or 6
I've shot many an old squaw & scoter over black milk juggs & red head & canny dekes ... it still works...trust me

there all over the special seaduck areas on long island my friend puts out like 2 dozen dekes and shoots a ton of em
In my experience, Great Lakes Squaw don't really care if you have squaw decoys or not. We run a bunch of super mag burlapped can's and bills and they don't blink an eye to decoy to them. IMO, they are soft of adverse to shore and boat blinds but are totally stupid to layout boats. Lot's of shots inside of 10'

I love oldsquaws and I also think they are one of the prettiest ducks out there  I love hearing their three note call and watching them bellyflop in the water! Here's one of mine I look at and remember often.

Well that about does it for me...

I think Mr. Coates is officially my new hero...
Some of those pics I was just thinking, "Man those decoys are toasted!". haha Old Squaws are some awesome looking ducks!
Hey Jeff any idea on when GHG is comming out with the squaw dekes? They have not updated the decoy site in awhile.
I keep looking at this post almost everyday, man i cant wait for it to get nasty out on the bay, and to hear that old squaw barking coming at me, did this one last month, just makes the wait even harder, but this is for the shelf.
