Hey everyone, I am new to the addiction and I am curious of how to target teal specifically. We have a bunch where I hunt and I see that as my best chance at getting a full limit. All I have seen is Green Wing but I have been told that Blue Wings inhabit the area too. I only have mallard dekes for now ($ is short and I am due to deploy so no use in buying any till I get back in 2011) but I have seen them buzz my dekes at first light. What calls (not brand but actually call like a hail or feeding chuckle) work for teal? All I have heard is peeps but there has to be more than that. Any help is appreciated and good luck everyone.

They peep and the hens have a high pitched raspy quack. They'll decoy quite well to mallard decoys. If you really want teal decoys, a lot of places have them on sale right now. I'd probably go greenwings...

A whistle like a wingsetter works to make the peep they use. Try to blow the word "tut" into most types of whistle and it should be okay and teal decoy well to mallards so you should be set. Good luck and be safe down range.

IDK if Mojo's are legal in your area, but if they are, Teal love them.

For calls, the Duck Commander Teal hen call sounds closest to the real thing that I've found. Other than that a normal whistle, almost every company sells one, will do the peep that the drake makes.

For decoys, when I target them in early teal season, I put out mallard hen decoys along with a few BW and GW teal decoys. The BW's go south first, so you will most likely have more GW's in your area, so put out more GW Teal deeks. Just mix them in with your mallard decoys for this time of year and you should be fine.

Although teal like places that other puddlers like, they also like mud flats and other places you may not see too many big ducks, so scouting for them specifically may be a good idea.

well because you said you are deploying im assuming you are in the military. if so, thank you so much for serving. teal come in to whistles very good, and if you cant use a mojo, get a winduk, they are wind powered.

Blue-winged teal are VERY rare in SoCal. I hunted waterfowl there for 20 years and only saw one verifiable blue-wing. It was killed on the Salton Sea. What you will see are cinnamon teal, along with the GW.

You don't have to do anything special to kill either Cinnamon or Green-Winged teal; they'll come in to any specie of decoys and you don't need to call....but you can, using a pintail whistle. The GW call is a decending order of four notes, but single short peeps will often work fine.

Wouldn't be at Edwards, would you? I enjoyed many good hunts on the Piute Ponds there.

You just may see some Blue-Wings on Pendleton. I've seen big flocks on the San Diego River estuary in years past, but it was in the spring when you could ID the drakes. Good luck!

How was your hunt today???? You might want to try San Jacinto once, also...

If you set out dekes, teal will generally always find them. They tend to be less picky about decoy spreads and less wary than most other birds. If they don't land in your spread you can usually count on them making atleast another pass for a second look. A mallard hail call will work to get their attention and either a good feeder call or "peep" on a whistle will finish them into your spread

Teal tend to cluster when on the water if you set 2 plus dozen teal decs put them close (almost bumping). Also teal will lite right in to goose decoys. As for calls a cheap 6 in one works great on teal, woodies, wedgon and pintail.

good luck
