well i have been telling my parents i wanted a black lab, as a hunting tool, and partner for as long as i can remember. I have been hunting since age 4, had my licence at age 7, and im now 15. I have hunted all over the place but never with a dog...i went away for 3 weeks, and just got back today. Little did i kno i had a 11 and a half week old black lab waiting for me in my room. I went crazy. His name is Kent. Both parents, are pure bred hunting labs, and he was bought off a hunting farm. My parents are great, it really makes me relize how much i appreciate them when somthing like this happens. Mom had been working with him (she used to train golden retrivers) and he is now consistenty doing short retrives with the canvas dummy. I could go on and on, but the truth is im way too excited

any pointers, andanything helpfull would be a huge help..thanks

Congrats on the new pup. My suggestion is find a good training program and stick with it. Maybe try to find a retriever club in your area where you can get some advice and or training partners. Good luck in your journey with your new pup, you will enjoy every minute of it for sure.

Get some training material, and get ready to have a lot of fun, because you will.

Working with a dog is possibly the most rewarding thing you can do. Enjoy every minute with the pup, because Kent won't be a pup for very long.

You asked for pointers. I have just started to really get into it with my first hunting dog, and so far I have three tips.

1- Have fun.
2- Try to understand what is going on in your dogs mind, because they don't think like people.
3- Enjoy it.

One and three are automatic.

Please keep us posted. While you're at it, maybe some pics?

water dog is a great book to use to train a dog

i have traind my own dogs once the dog is traind it is always go to work the dog in the off season

my dog is now 8yrs. old i still work her if she was 1yrs.
when i comes to hunt ther are no glitches in her

another little advice if you train this dog in your yard/field that yard / field is what that dog knows so what im geting at the dog could be working great their then you bring him hunting it will be new to him he might not work to his potintial give him time to get warmed up to the actual hunting situation
