Greetings all,

I'm hunting Umatilla on Sunday Oct. 24 (drew Pick #9), but wondering if it's worth making the drive on Saturday to try for an afternoon hunt as a stand-by. Does anyone have any insights on hunting standy-by at Umatilla? If I arrive at 3pm on Saturday, what are the odds that I can get into a decent blind for an afternoon hunt? I have a feeling that it's not worth coming out for Saturday hunting unless I can get there early - would be grateful for any insights.

Also, anyone have ideas on the best / worst blinds in the wildlife refuge. It would seem to me that any blind in the McCormack Slough is good - but I could be wrong.

(BTW - I called the FWS office and learned nothing. The McCormack Unit brochure says the check station closes at 1pm, but the office says the check station will be staffed, but has no idea if stand-by would work in the afternoon.)

Excellent - thank you ORwaterfowler. Have you got an opinion on what kind of crowds I might run into on a Saturday afternoon, and how late I can show up and still get a blind?

I'm hoping I can get in an evening hunt. Of course, as you say, weather is a big factor. Evening hunts on bluebird days can be pretty slow, until shooting time ends and the birds start swarming in as you pick up the decoys....

The few times that I jumped around from different blinds I always showed up at just after 12 when all the upland hunters are done checking in. Not to sure how long there would be someone in the check station I been told till 1:00 and 3:00 but like I said I show up when just after the upland hunters are wraped up.

Not sure about the crowd on the 2nd weekend. But a kid i work with has a uncle that lives close to the refuge and he hunts from standby darn near every weekend of the season and does well. I know i have a couple draws later in the season both are for saturdays. So i plan on hunting from standby on sundays to make a weekend out of it. Can't really help you as far as where to go,this will be my first year hunting there also.
