I know for a fact that deer are sensitive to UV brightners e.g house hold washing powders ect. Are ducks the same? I've tried finding information on it but its all deer, deer, deer!

A kiwi in need

I have no basis for this, but I wouldn't think that UV would be such a problem with ducks. Deer eyes are made to recieve as much light as possible, so they can see in the dark, but I don't think that duck's eyes made to really see well in the dark. This light reception capability is what I figure allows the deer to see UV brighteners. This is just a theory, but it sounds like it might not be complete BS.

Seems they can see ultra violet light! I read this in a magazine of mine just now.The feather patterns on birds actually reflect UV light to ducks so for a more realistic decoy one can place feathers on it. Interesting to note they have even better color discriminaton than us also! Another important fact is we have only 200 000 cones persquare milimeter while a duck has over 400 000. The most important thing the article says is to stay still and to wear good camo that breaks up your outline as thier movement detection is incredibly supperior to ours .However it does not talk about the impact UV brightners have though.

Good homework for us all!

I've never washed my duck clothes in anything without UV brighteners and haven't had any problems that I know of. Deer and turkies I'm a little more careful with though.

If you take a look at All types of birds in the world they have bright colors on them, mostly the males, to attract others of their species, so that is probably why bright colors don't frighten them but movement in the relm of their vision sure does.

I don't think we really know what birds see, and what attracts them. I am cautious and don't usually use laundry detergent on my camos. Instead, I normally put a cup of vinegar in the wash cycle. It seems to get them clean without fading, and they come out smelling of nothing at all.

Being at the bottom of the food chain, I am dead certain ducks are sensitive to movement more than anything else. That is why movement in the decoys is so powerful, and movement in the blind is so fatal.

How many of us have been working on the duck set up the day before the season begins, while wearing blue jeans and (pick your favorite team) sweatshirt, emblazed with color when we hear wings above us, stand perfectly still, and watch them land near by.
