hey guys i jusr got a 14 ft jon boat and now i am looking for a motor what size should i go with so it wont be underpowered? what would be idea?l i will be making most of my runs from 1 to 5 miles from the ramp to the hunting spot and it will be a mixture of creeks rivers and open water

10 or 15 hp should do the trick just right a 6 or 8 will get you there but tough to plane when fully loaded

Ive ran a 1436 and a 1440 and ran a 25 on both and ended up with a 40 on the 1440. :yes:

anything bigger than a 15 in an outboard is going to be overkill unless is wider than 50 inches. the boat will last alot longer without problems if you don't overpower

i run a 20 hp mariner on my 1442 and it is by no means overkill. of course my boat is always loaded to the keels with coys, dog, partner, guns, ammo, fuel, batteries, anchor, etc... you can't go wrong with anything bigger than a 9.9hp. a 6hp will definately NOT get the job done unless you plan on trolling over to your spot. you will never get on plane with a 6hp. i've run a 6 on a ten foot jon, and still could never get on plane. just be cautious of the shape of your transom, if it's in good form, you'll be just fine!!
