It's been years since I had any birds mounted and now that I have two sons hunting for the first time this year, I promised them that if they shot a really nice drake pintail I would get it mounted for them. Can any of you give me some good advice on what steps I need to take for the care of the bird from the time its downed to the time to the taxidermist?

This has been posted before on the Taxidermy forum under "how long". But, here it is again. Tuck his head under it's wing and then put it into a zip-lock freezer bag. You can 2-ply it if you would like. You can also put some paper towel in it's mouth to keep blood off the feathers. Push all the air youj can out of the bag. This will prevent freezer burn longer. Hope this helps. Wings cupped, Pete

i just use a leg off of a pair of panty hose. insert the duck head first, like you're putting on a sock. this will keep the feathers laying in the proper direction. from that point, it goes into the freezer until i can get it to the taxidermist. (which is usually within 7 days of killing it.)
