Well I am glad somebody likes the Haydel DR-85. I own this call and it never made it to the laynard. I also don't like the wench.....I must have a totally different calling style than you guys. I think RNT's Quackhead series are much better than Haydel.....heck I think The Duck Commander line is much better than Haydel.

I have heard many people say they like the dr-85 and wench.......they just don't fit me.

I hate to rain on everyones parade here but....there is no correct answer to this question. No one on this forum can answer that. What you need to do is try as many different call as you possibly can, than you can make that decision on your own.

Also, I think there is WAY more to buying a call than just how it sounds. Like feel in your hand, feel against your lips, how it looks, and lastly how much it costs. Some guys overlook these things and buy call because someone tells them it is "good." Well there defenition of "good" will probaly be different than mine.

If you do not have the oppurtunity to try to many calls, go with a custom call maker. Most of these call makers(many are sponsers here) can custom fit you with something. A lot of times you can call them and tell them what kind of call that you are currently using and how you like it, and they can give you something close to what you would like....

I would suggest a custom callmaker for you but there is way to many to list here...

And to add to that, where your hunting makes a difference as well. Your best net is to g to a shop and blow them all. I am an RNT fan. Never let me down with the quality of these calls. My favorite List would go as follows.
When I'm on open water, fields or maybe public land with competition and need to get loud and raunchy I like the RNT Daisy Cutter. Awesome call. But your louder calls typically have wider bores and in reurn can be more difficult to master. Its like rnt claims, if if you can drive it, game over!
For a great medium volume call I like the RNN short barrel. Little easier to drive.
For an absolute wonderful timber call and or finishing call, the RNT Tmbre. Sweet sexy and very user friendly! The 1/4" bore allows plenty of back pressure and makes it very easy to every sound you need.
my preference is wood calls over acrylic calls. Acrylic calls can be sharper and a little louder, but to me a wooden call sounds more natural. Plus they are more affordable. : ). Definetly go with a nicer call that fits all your needs. I used those mass produce cheap calls for years and had to but new ones every year or two. They will never produce the sounds and blow as smooth as an top end custom call. It will cost more now but it will even out. It is a good investment. Plus you can send them back to RNT every year for like five bucks and they will replace the reed and cork and tune it for you. Much better deal. Good luck.

Which ever you learn to use properly, not what you have but do you know how to use it? A great call in the hands of someone that doesn't know what's going on is nearly worthless compared to a really good caller with a "lesser" call. Most a really good, it's up to you to make it work

It's all about how it sounds to you personally, and also if you're not confident in it you won't blow it well either. I like the tone of the DR so I use it better than most of my other calls. Different strokes for different folks.

I've always wanted to know how to do that but there's no way I could spend money on trying to learn a skill that I might not be able to pick up.....like whistling by using two fingers. For the life of me, I could never get the hang of it. :lol3:

Im guessing the guy blowing the cutdown will kill more ducks than the guy blowing himself. Im just sayin....

Ill second what others have said...co custom. CNC'ed calls will never match a quality hand turned one. Ill catch some flak for that statement Im sure. My personal opinion is that Mr. David Gaston makes the finest calls on the planet. He learned from Mr. Taylor if that tells you anything. If I had to choose just one it would be an acrylic Field model. However, I also have a single reed timber call that that is super nasty, and all I have to do is breath into it and mallard feathers start coming out :). In all seriousness I feel these are the finest calls out there, and I have at least 1 of each model he makes, some more than one and they are all pure duck.

Yup........you sure will. I've yet to find any custom call makers lineup that even comes close to RNT and Echo in terms of overall sound quality. Not saying the customs aren't pretty or perhaps even more well made, but for straight up sound quality........I will take an RNT or Echo any day. Of course that is IMHO, if yours varies and you're happy with it, good for you.

I'm wit' him. Much as the notion of running custom duck calls hand crafted in a one man shop appeals to me, I've pretty much given up on them suiting me as well as some CNCed calls do. And, yes, I've tried two Gastons. I enjoyed my interactions with David, thought his calls well made and used them in the field virtually, if not, daily for a season before RNTs that functioned better for me replaced them. Different strokes...
