I saw some of these shells at an Academy today. It looks like the Winchester's Marketing Dept. has been busy trying to build a better mouse trap. At one time Remington marketed a #6 1/2 steel load as a trap load so I thought some on here would be interested in hearing about this load.

I purchased a few and dissected some of these low-cost factory steel shotshells to assess their component consistency and quality. I’ll be patterning them in the coming weeks to assess their patterning performance against other Xpert #6 and #7 steel loads so stay tuned in for those result's.

Powder and shot data were obtained by cutting open five shells from the same box as the shells to be patterned and counting and weighing the components.

Wow factories are getting really creative with their pellet sizing ! I don't understand their logic in small sizes
of pellets with half sizes ? There's plenty of pattern density with 1 oz in most sizes from 5's on down .
The energy needed for small birds can be at velocities below 1400 fps as the weight of each pellet really
doesn't carry very far no mater , how fast you push them . I do see marketing trying to , one up the next
competition but , those of us looking for ammo to do the job , at a reasonable price point , is all we ask !

I saw xpert is now offering a #2/4 duplex too. I find it hilarious because all their shells are duplex plus some lol. Whats the pellet count on these 6.5s vs 6s and 7s? I find it funny that win thinks they can size xpert shot to the 1/2 size. From your numbers it looks like a #6/7 duplex (if you can even call it that).

I Like your style Joe , takes all the guesswork out of testing !
With those 6.5 pellets not being annealed but harder than 150 dph , your Lightning barrels showing any affects ?
Oh and another question , constriction , they must be patterning tighter too ?

No affects I can see. I've shot thousands (probably many more) Xpert shells through my 20 and 12ga Citoris and 870s with no noticeable or visible affects. You can check out the patterning I did on the next post! ;)

Got the pattern work and reading done so I'll post the dissection and patterning results from this #6.5 steel load. Now you can be the judge!

12ga 2 ¾” #6.5 Winchester Xpert Game & Target Steel Load

Pattern results from a 12-gauge Browning Citori with 28" Invector-plus barrels using Briley flush chokes (patterns average of five, 30" post-shot scribed circle, yardage taped muzzle to target, and in-shell pellet count average of five).

IC / 309.2 (83.4%)

40 YARDS
LM / 242.4 (65.4%)
M / 253.2 (68.3%)

PS: If I was going to shoot this load at dove, I'd have a SK (~.005")/Mod (~.020") choke combo in my O/U and if I had a single barreled gun, I'd probably have an IC (~.010") choke installed.

Hope this helps, good luck!
