Can the load data for 15g/cc be used for 18g/cc shot?? I noticed BP has some published loads for their 18g/cc shot at 1700 fps. I don't understand the reason for 1700 fps loads for high density shot. Can someone explain?

I can see Zero reason for shooting high-density shot at 1700 FPS

The shot already performs well beyond any range I can shoot and maintain sufficient pattern density even for small ducks, 1300 FPS gives me more range than I need. Any extra muzzle velocity is just more recoil in my opinion

I would think that you could use a 15g/cc recipe, and replace the shot with tss... same hardness, higher density gives shorter shot column thus less friction thus less pressure.
However, as always you cant go the other way and use less dense shot in a recipe than specified. So if you have a hw18 recipe, no replacing the shot with hw15 or hw13.

Hawglips posted that the payload changes can be so much going to tss, your pressures can be way low, so its not an automatic thing.

Putting 1-7/8 oz oz of TSS #2 shot in Federal Heavyweight hulls that had 1-7/8 oz of 15g/cc Heavyweight shot in them DID NOT WORK.

I put one 1/2" fiber wad and two 1/8" cork wads under the 1-7/8 oz of TSS #2 shot in the factory hulls that had 1-7/8 oz of 15g/cc Heavyweight shot in them and had them tested at Precision Reloading.

With the much shorter shot column and the soft filler wads under the shot my first test loads only averaged 2214 psi.

I ended up loading 2-1/8 oz of TSS #2 shot with a 1/2" fiber wad under the shot in the 3-1/2" factory hulls with the factory powder, wad, hull and primer that had 1-7/8 oz of Federal Heavyweight shot in them. These 2-1/8 oz loads of TSS #2 shot averaged 8543 psi at 1213 fps.

I would have never thought that the shorter shot column and putting more cushion filler wads under the shorter shot column would make THAT BIG of a difference.

If you have a 15g/cc load that you want to try the same weight of TSS shot in it I don't think I would add more cushion wads under the TSS shot. I would use filler beads or flax seeds on top of the shot to take up the extra space that the denser TSS shot created.

It would be a good idea to have your TSS loads tested , especially if you never had the HW15 load tested.

I have a 12 ga 2-3/4" Fed Gold Medal 1 oz TSS tested load if anybody want to see that data. There are some other test load data sheets I will also send, 3" 1-1/2 oz HW13 BB and 15g/cc FHW #2 shot loads. Just send me a PM with your e-mail Address and I will send the test data sheets to you.

With the HD top quality pellets, you do not need a large payload to bag birds..........

plus, with the high cost of the pellets, you are wasting money and pellets, unless you are such a bad shot , that you need more pellets ?? !!!

Match the pellet size to the bird and range.................. and get er done.
