Is the any advantage of one over the other? I have an 8 on my MEC 700 right now but have been looking into taking the factory pre crimp off and replacing it with a 6 point from BPI. The HW15 I loaded was done with 8 point and it worked fine.

I tried both 6 and 8 point crimps with new Cheddite hulls with the 1oz Lightning steel loads a couple of years ago. I couldn't tell the difference on the pattern board. Although I read that 6 point is better for new hulls, I found the 8 point crimp looked better and stayed tight, so all my loads are 8 point.

Obviously with previously fired hulls that decision was made for you. :lol3:

hi,

other than a small drop in pressure when using 8 pt (500-1000 psi), they're exactly the same and is more a question of what you like
cheers,
I found the exact opposite especially with steel hunting loads, 8 point crimps usually give slightly higher velocities and pressures. Not enough to worry about but it's there. Think the 6 point crimps are much easier to make with new hulls than eight point also.

strange really, although i only tested lead, but the more folds you make the easier should be to unfold thus reducing pressure.

I think is steel that acts 'strange' compared to lead

Never noticed any difference. Never tried to change one to the other. New hulls I normally use 6 point. Fio hulls seemed to be the worst. I would use a hairdryer to heat the hull up. Even then they didn't like to make a good crimp. On the second load they would crimp nicer.
