Hi all,

I am about to buy myself a new shotgun (Maxus, Versa Max or Xplor). But I'm not so sure the bead or fiberoptic sight on the mentioned shotguns are optimal?
Here in Norway there is no activity during the daylight hours, so what would be the choice to make for those dusk or dawn fliers?

If having a flourescent "sight" on your shotgun leads to looking at the sight rather than the target, it will be counterproductive.
If the gun fits you, a front sight is superfluous.

If you feel you need a flourescent front sight, any of them will do the job.

Having a sight like the EasyHit forces you to get your head down on the stock and the average non-shooter stands a better chance of hitting with it than without.

sights on a shottie.... well, back to basics. go grab a old model outta the closet, one with just a front metal bead. now sight it on something. now lift you head up away from the sight line and watch the bead ain relation to the target... notice the bead stays "on target" until your eyes are really far away from the sight line, even though you are not 'sighting'. Keep BOTH eyes open and get the big picture !!!! Yep, head up, elbow DOWN, eyes open, Swing~ point~ shoot & follow through. Shottie basics..... Practice in the garage with an unloaded gun, on a swinging tennis ball tied to a string hung from the ceiling . Sighting is a hard habit to break for some, but shotties dont require the old, " Close an eye, line up the sights" thing.
Thats why shotties never had true sights. Most came only with a front bead. No rear sight. Its not needed on wing or moving shots. hence the " Point and shoot" teaching of the pro's.
Sights were added when shotties started becoming refined higher priced still shot guns as in deer and turkey. Fiber optics and red dots followed close behind. They make a great looking add on where gun manufactures can add a few hundred to the price with little or no real expense on their part, like chrome hub caps on a car.
My 835 has the front and rear, adjustable fiber optic sights. Aside from looing good, they are pointless,
Because realisticaly, on wing shots, aside from low light assistance on target aquisition, sights are a pointless added feature on wing guns.
{ NOTE: Both eyes open give BI~nocluar Vision, an absolute MUST for moving targets and depth perception}

While no sights is the typically suggested way to shoot using proper (In your own mind) technique. Alot of folks will never devote the time or resources to become proficient. I happen to know some very good sight shooters whether it's proper etiquette or not. So aside from all the professionals who are quick admonish you for using one on this site if you want a bead the Easyhit is the way to go. I take alot of non shooters and hunters with me and I have seen a noticeable difference by using this sight simply by forcing them to get their heads down which is major reason for a miss IMO. I wouldn't actually consider this a site as much as it is a reference point that aids in technique.

The way I teach instinctive shooting is with a BB gun that has a wooden rib, painted black (made from hobby stock) fitted over the sights simulating a shotgun rib. More important it makes the sights unuseable. You can cobble this up with glue, black spray paint, and attach it with black vinyl tape.

I start with a 5 gallon metal can at about 10 yards, practice the mount and quickly shooting the can without aiming.

Practice on this until you hit it every time very quickly.

Then move to a gallon can and master that, lastly put up three gallon cans about 5 yards apart and have someone randomly call left, right, or center, and on their call quickly mount the gun and get on target and shoot - - -

Then practice practice practice - - -

Thats some good advice right there. These high speed flourscent sights are prob the most counter productive thing ever to hit the wing shooting market
