Anyone ever buy one? How'd you go about getting one?

Used to be a breeze to get one titled now it is almost impossible. If you tell them it is homemade they are going to ask for the VIN#. If you tell them you built it they are going to want a detailed receipt showing every piece of metal, axle, bearing, screw, nut, bolt etc. that was used to build it. They also are going to require it to be inspected by ISP. I have a buddy who is going through all this now. He has given up on getting it titled.

Consider yourself warned before you buy.

No title is what stopped me from buying a 3rd boat just for the motor the DMV is hard to deal with .One question do you own property or have a summer home in another state a few guys I know have places in Michigan and the other in Wisconsin and there they don't need titles .I used to do that a few years ago and I titled it there .Just saying

IL SOS will take a Bill of Sale from an unregistered trailering state and issue a title and registration on the spot. Some SOS employees are sticklers if the BOS isn't notarized and documented with the correct information. Usually the trailer VIN is forgot about on many BOS. This is where the problem starts. If SOS asks for a VIN verification through Law Enforcement Certification, any local police department, sheriff's department or state police can complete the form. Here is the form: https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/vsd43.pdf

But, I hope for the best and update us when you go to the Currency Exchange for some dirty work in the back room...

I just registered my non-titled trailer in IL. When they asked for the title, I explained that the trailer was from a state (FL) which does not title trailers. I showed the FL registration with necessary VIN and specs, paid the man, and they issued me a title for the trailer in IL. I would assume that if it is a new purchase, you would need a bill of sale with the necessary specs and if you can get the registration from the owner (if their state even requires that), I'm sure it would help.

This might help someone in the future......I know you can do this with a car and I am fairly certain on a trailer too. Vermont has very liberal registration laws on older vehicles. If the vehicle is over 5 years old (I think that is the cut off, might be 8 years) you can register it in the state through the mail without a title from the original state it came from. They will mail you a license plate and a registration card. Once you receive that you can take it to the DMV in any state that requires a title and get it titled and registered in that state. I was looking at some classic trucks that had lost titles and came across a classic truck forum where they discussed it. I have not done it but I did tell a family member about it and he did it with a van he had bought without a title. Worked like a charm.
