I have a Browning a-5 magnum that hates federal shells and jams with anything less than 3 inch magnums.I know the gun is clean and seems to be in proper working order.I have to shoot it with one friction ring for steel shot and it still jams with 2 3/4 inch shells. If this gun isn't cleaned inside and out after every trip it will jam .Not that i mind cleaning a gun .. just hate listening to my brother in law bitch because my gun always jams up at the end of the day .When i clean the gun I spray the action out with gun scrubber and give everything a light coat of rem oil and wipe most off with a clean cloth .Any ideas would be appreciated.

I wish I could tell you a trick, but I can't I shoot an A5 and the thing doesn't miss. I can go weeks w/out cleaning and it still fires with no problems. The only problems I have had are rust on the gun and the inability to eject low brass shells.

You say it hates Federals.....so stop using them. Mine didn't like federals either. I stopped using them. I only used 3" in my mag 12 and it cycled as well as any gun out there. Dump the 2 3/4" loads and stick with 3" and your problems will go away.

The correct setting for the Mag-12 with any steel shell is one friction ring. Although many Mag-12's will cycle lighter shells it is not designed to shoot anything lighter than 1 1/8th oz. loads. I have never found a brand of shell that any of my A-5's don't like.

Ohhhhhh B gold i dont think i could put my misery on another hunter... just wouldnt be right  . I have only ever sold 1 gun and i wish i had it back 100 times over.As far as federals ... i have no clue why ...shoots remingtons and winchesters no problem .Not that 3 inch shells is a probelm but for most of my early duck hunting the shots ar 30-35 yards and 3 inch shells seem a little much on woodies and teal .As the proud new owner of a Franchi912 Variomax 12 guage i guess i will just have to retire the browning till my grandson is old enough to hunt.God bless Ducks Unlimited...

It was worth a shot! I just got done looking at A5 Magnums on Gunbroker when I read your post, and it's looking like it's another itch that is gonna have to be scratched!

Good luck with it, and looks like the guys have already given you some great advise, so I'm done hijacking your post

I have had a similiar problem with my A-5. I learned that the forearm on mine was being dented by the barrel. As the wood was dented in, the barrel would not sit correctly causing it to not cycle correctly. Sorry for the poor quality pictures. You can see the small retangle type dents on both sides, in the middle of the bottom of the forearm. These dents are approximately 1/8" deep. I brought mine to a gunsmith and that was the first thing he looked at. I replaced my forearm with a synthetic. That one now has similiar type markings but it is not dented. My dad also has a A-5 and his has dents also but not deep enough to make a diiference. When I put my new forearm on, I no longer had any problems. Anyone that has a A-5 should check their forearm for this problem. If you pound the shells through them they can cause these dents. My dad and I have both used 2 friction rings when shooting steel. Good luck!! :salude:

My dad's got an old A-5 and he has that problem with federal shells too. So he shoots winchester xperts and has no problems ejecting them.
