Heavy recoil on a Browning Maxus

Hello everybody, new to the forum. Have been reading it for quite some time though. I just picked up a Browning Maxus, and shot it for the first time today. This thing kicked like nothing I have ever shot. My Stoeger doesn't have this much recoil. Just wondering if something could be wrong with it. Every review I have read states it should have light recoil. The gun was purchased by me, brand new. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

What type of shells were you shooting out of it? I bought mine 2 weeks ago and the first shells I used were 3 1/2 Remingtons and they felt like trap loads out of my Mossberg pump. I have been shooting trap with it and light loads barely have any recoil at all.

I will let someone else with more experience with the gun give their opinion but that has been my experience so far. The Maxus has been my best purchase in a looong time!

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was shooting 3" Winchester Blind Side #2's, 3" Hevi Metal #3's, and Remington Sportsman 3" #1's and #2's. I bought the 3" chamber with a 26" barrel. I was told there wasn' t any break in period on the gun. I also shot a box of 2 3/4" light loads. These weren't bad, but the heavy loads were harsh.

Oh yeah, as far as the creatine powder goes, my whey and casein protein does the trick. I don't think not being able to handle the gun is the problem. Thanks for the tip though.

Maybe my issue was un-clear. I am wanting to know if there could be something wrong with the gun, causing it to have the heavy recoil. The last thing I want is this shotgun coming apart in my hands when I pull the trigger. Every other owner of this gun states it has very little recoil. I am making sure the gun is functioning properly. I also have a Remmy 11-87, that does not have half the recoil the Maxus had today. Just looking for suggestions or opinions. Thanks.

I shot 3 1/2" heavy metal all year last year out of my Maxus, and they felt like trap loads.....I traded my stoeger in toward it, so I can compare the two, and there is no comparison.....the Stoeger kicked like a beast, and the Maxus doesn't. I don't know what would cause yours to be any different. I know 3 other guys with a Maxus, and they said the same thing about it being the lightest recoil they have ever had with a steel load. Maybe it was the blindside?? I Dunno man.

Hey guys, there was no offense taken so I'm sorry if I came off that way. As far as the Stoeger goes, I still have one, and yes, it is a beast. There has to be something wrong with Maxus. It was not fun to shoot, with recoil worse than the M2000. (Shot side by side.) I think I will call Browning on Monday to see if they have any suggestions. Hopefully it's just a simple issue to fix. Thanks again for the input. Did anyone go through a break in period with theirs? Just wondering if I didn't do something right.

Alright, I just got of the phone with Browning. I spoke with the service department, and basically told them about this gun kicking like a mule. I gave them the specific shells I was using, and his answer was this. There are different springs in the 3" and 3 1/2" guns. The 3 1/2" gun will handle heavier loads better due to the stiffer spring. He also said when you have a gun that light, it is going to have heavy recoil. I told him that I shot one last season that was alot softer, and he told me it must have been a 3 1/2" chamber.

They did offer to take a look at it, so I am on my way to send it to them. Hopefully they will be able to correct the issue, otherwise this thing is going in the safe. Always open to suggestions or ideas.

I shot a friend's Maxus last year with target loads on a Sporting Clays course and I thought it had more kick to it then my 391 Beretta. Those were heavy loads you were shooting, and like the other guy says, when a duck is coming in, you don't feel recoil or even hear the gun go off. Try a box of light 2 3/4 inch target loads around 1200 fps and see what that feels like. I'm a Beretta fan but the Maxus has been a good seller for Browning.

I shot some Winchester 2 3/4" light loads that weren't too bad. Unfortunately I can't use those to hunt with. When I was talking to the service rep today he said that due to the light weight of the gun it was going to have heavy recoil. I shot one last hunting season, and it had alot less recoil than mine. I guess I will see if there is anything wrong in the next few days.

I feel like it fits me. My head is up when I bring the gun to my shoulder. I am looking straigt down the barrel without having to lean my head over, and LOP seems to be right. Is there something else I am missing? I have never been told the proper way to see if a gun fits. Always just bought the one that felt right when I shouldered it.

well if it doesnt fit properly you wont be shouldering it right and the butt of the gun will not be in the proper place on your shoulder

That could be, but i don't understand why one would have more recoil than the other. Unless the statement about the different springs is true. The service rep told me he didn't like the Maxus because it was so light, and he works for Browning. Go figure....
I will just have to wait for the phone call from them. Other than the recoil, that shotgun was great. It cycled everything i put in it, and pointed really well for me. As soon as i hear something i will keep everybody up to date.

Numerous different things go into percieved recoil. If you are using the same shell the biggest factor is gun weight. Your Maxus weighs just under 7 lbs and your 11-87 weighs over 8 lbs. That is a 20% decrease in weight. Fit also has a lot to do with percieved recoil. You might be pushing you face down on the stock more then on you other gun transfering more energy to your head instead of your shoulder. The spring and 3.5 inch chamber could make some difference as could lengthening you forcing cones. If it bother you I would get a different gun. Shovla and lead farmer. It is nice to hear that Mossberg and Browning have engineered their guns well enough that 1.5 oz of shot going 1500fps feels the same as 1oz of shot going 1300. They must have failed physics class.

Does anyone know a time frame I should expect with Browning? I've never had to send a gun off like this, so I don't know what to expect. Our early teal starts on the 24th, so I was hoping to have it back before then.
