In the process of building a blind but I'm torn between using a thatch roll from Home Depot which is priced decently or using camo systems mesh tarp. I'm hunting in reeds. This is for a boat. I was wondering how easy it is to fold up these natural grass mats. The camo systems just seems easier but the grass mat would look more natural. Has anyone had any experience with the Home Depot stuff. It's a 30"x57' roll of the stuff for 120 bucks. Seems cheap.

Wow, that stuff will put the fast grass makers out of business! Same thing at a much cheaper price. Too bad it doesn't blend with the areas I hunt.

yeah thats the stuff i figure if i need it a little darker or greener i can just spray paint it lightly. As far as cutting what i plan to do is cut it between the weaves then zip tie the weaves where the palm leaves inter connect and then just do the same on the other cut side. or see how they end it.

what I'm not sure of is how does this stuff fold? do i have to run it up my blind vertically or can i make one length horizontally?

What do you guys do with your fast grass?

I could dam sure make that work for the price. Nothing a can of paint can't fix. i wonder how well it would hold up to trailering down the road though.

Thats enough grass to hide a small house boat, I'd have enough left everyone would be getting grass skirts for christmas.

I ordered mine thru tikishackimporter.com it is the same imported material and seems to work very well. I purchased the 30"x60' roll for around $130 and i believe it shipped free. This is the second season we've had it on the blind and I havent found anywhere it is damaged or coming undone. It is brittle though so be careful when zip tying it onto your blind frame it will break the weaving if tied too tight. All in all it hides well and seems to be a good value.

So prolly not good for folding or quick set type blinds??

Well I bought the big ass roll of the stuff from Home Depot online they say it will be here on the 1st of october. I already made an ad on craigslist saying I have 30ft left over for trade for some decoys. I'll let you guys know how it works with pics when I get it on my blind.

keep it in good shape during the summer (out of sun/rain) and it holds up fine. i actually zip tie it to landscape netting to add rigidity. mine folds and runs down the road. the dogs beat up the front where they're in and out but other than that it holds up quite well. i wouldnt mind trying to RIT dye some of this stuff to get the right color... i think i paid almost $300 avery mats last time around.

here's how mine is set up:

I used that same Thatch on my hard sided blind for 3 years till i decided to move to a pop up style blind it held up very well and is still in use on a blind we have on a hedgerow of a corn field and still looks decent 5 years later now i cannot say it would hold up to being folded down on for a popup style blind every day i did not use it that way i went with raffia grass but it did last much longer then fastgrass thats for sure. Also it did hold paint fairly well i just used a rattle can and added some darker browns to break it up a little more but it worked for me. I agree that for the price you wont be dissapointed tying it worst case you will have pleanty of decoration for a hawaian themed party lol

Right now online at Scheels you can get Avery real grass for $49. That is 4 sheets of 4'x5". So that would mean you could cover one side of a 16' boat and the grass would be 5' tall. You would need two of these to cover a 16' boat making your overall investment $100 + whatever shipping is. Now let's look at this thatch stuff. It's 30" (2.5 feet) by 57'. Seems like a lot but when you factor in that the height is 1/2 of what you get with the Avery's it really doesn't add up. So again with some math. To cover a16' boat on one side to the same degree as Averys, you would have to use two strips of 16' feet, one on top of the other making it 32' of materal. So to cover both sides you would need a total of 64' which you don't Even have in the roll. Also, Avery real grass can be cut to without it unravelling. So I think that when all is said and done, it might actually be cheaper and less of a headache to use the Avery's. ( note: the math in this is all hypothetical and actual coverage would vary by give or take 10')

Yeah that's a pretty good deal. cabelas has northern flight grass for 100 for 8 sheets. It just went on sale after I bought this roll. My blind is a canopy style there's a roof over top that flips up and the front that you face comes up about eye level so 30 inches will do for that side then two 30inch runs for the other side which my blind is about 13 ft long.

I should have went with the northern flights grass I'll wait to see this stuff I ordered if it's junk I'll return it and get the stuff from cabelas. Home Depot was like 15 bucks more than Amazon for the thatch roll but I went with them because I have the ability to return it in store.

I'm sure it will work out fine either way. It's splitting hairs about cost when you factor in shipping. Convenience etc are about the same. I was thinking about this for my kayak, the 5' sheets are too big, 2.5 would have been perfect. I just don't need 57' feet ha

They also sell 8ft by 30 inch rolls, that would work for your yak.
