Picked up a Retay Masai Mara towards the end of waterfowl season last year. At first look and feel, thought it was great. But after getting into the gun a bit, and shooting it, having second thoughts. Tried to change the shims, impossible. Noticed when I took the gun apart, the stock shim, one of the little cleats that hold it into the back of the receiver was smashed. When I tried to fit in the shim I wanted, the cleat holes on the shim would not line up with the ones on the back of the receiver. Thought maybe I got a bad shim. Ordered another, same problem. The spacing of the cleat holes on back of the receiver are spaced further apart than the cleats on the shim. Had to snap the top of the shim to get it to fit in the cleat holes on back of the receiver.
Another big problem I’m having, every single time I have shot this gun at a bird directly above me, it jams. Fires the shot, and won’t eject the shell, every time. Has happened with 3”, and 3 1/2” shells. Not too big on this gun anymore!

Maybe got a lemon, my shims all fit perfectly in mine. Also, mine dont jam shooting straight up, i know a lot of inertia guns will not load another shell shooting in that position. From the ones ive had do it, it was usually me not holding the gun tight enough to let the bolt spring compress all the way. Operator error. Not saying thats your issue but maybe try that. If the holes are wrong in the receiver then something should be done about that

I think I also got a lemon, Got the Masai Mara maybe 3 months ago and it's been a rough road ever since. I figured If I spent $1400 I should be able to shoot anything 1oz @ any fps 1-1/8 @ any fps heck If I load a spoon in the chamber it better shoot and eject. Me and my buddy bought guns the same day his a Benelli mine a Retay both brand new perfect so see what the differences In a Turkish mod vs the real thing. They weren't out of the box 5 min before we were shooting clays. Winchester 1oz @ 1300 I believe worked in his gun every time mine it was 75% of the time. those were his shells mine were Herders 1oz @ 1290 fps and they jammed every time and in his gun as well. so I decided to guy a case of Federal 1oz @ 1200 those also didn't shoot at all jammed every time. I call retay up and they inform me that the guns not meant to shoot those get 1 1/8 @ 1200 and if it doesn't shoot those send the gun back. I buy another case of Winchester 1-1/8 oz @ 1200 take them out to shoot and they jam every other shot. ( This is all summed up over a month or so i've had 14 boxes of shells through it by now) I send the gun back, they paid it all didn't cost me a dime took about 17 days ( It is vary hard to get ahold of the company no one ever answers there phones and its just as hard to get them to call you back I had to leave a few messages) Got a call yesterday saying my gun will be here today that they shot 9 shots through it 3 of all the sizes and it ran fine. Got the gun back today from Retay they put a lighter spring in, replaced the trigger the firing pin and a extractor I believe. Went out right away to shoot it it shot 5/6 Winchester 1 1/8oz and I was super supersized that it shot all the shells that it wasn't even rated for 1oz @ 1180 & 1290 just shot 3 of each and it ran fine maybe I just got lucky im not sure. So I went out bird hinting with the dog shooting those winchesters and my luck ended Had 4 jam out of 12. I'm sure I didn't hold the gun any different. that's like 63% Im sorry but when you buy a new car and it brings you home from the store 63% of the time that's not a good car. Im so lost on what to do with the gun because I took it out back and had to double check and it ran 6/6 winchers fine. The gun is so hit or miss. What i'm noticing now with the lighter spring is now the action kinda hangs up they advertise that there actions never bump open but now i'm seeing there isn't a much tension on the bolt. To the point where I can get the bolt to hang out @ 3 different spots now while closing the gun. Will from Retay gave me the original spring so I have both of them incase I want to put the tighter one back in for goose season but it wont hurt if I dont he says. I just don't know what to do anymore All the stuff advertised on google about these guns is nothing but good stuff its hard to find much bad about a Retay I still don't hate the gun its the best fitting shotgun i've found so far at least for me. I hope someone gains something from my experience. If i could go back Id get a Gordon in 3". Tomorrow clay bird shoot will determine if I call Retay Monday morning.

So I Tried to send the gun back Yesterday but Will from Retay told me that there isn't anymore we can do with you gun, after telling me a month ago over and over that a Retay Masia Mara will shoot 1 1/8 @ 1200 I got a case of them and when that wouldn't cycle, Even after he modified the spring he decided to change up his story and say that he never said those numbers. He claimed that he said 1 1/8 @1250. I still have the paper I wrote the notes down when we talked on the phone. I wouldn't have bought case of shells on a hunch. His word against mine there is nothing I can do.

I will say that with the modifications he did it will shoot 1oz @1180 and 1oz @ 1290 98% of the time witch the gun isn't supposed to do. I'm pretty thrilled about it makes the whole situation sting a little less. But Winchesters for some reason the gun isn't a fan of least for mine that is. He did give me the extra spring which is nice so I will be able to switch the springs out come Duck & goose season.

YUP SAME ISSUES HERE
THE RECOIL SPRING HAD RUSTED
1-IT JAMMED BOLT IN RECEIVER OUTTA THE BOX
2-ALL METAL PARTS MINUS BOLT AND TRIGGER HAVE NO COATING AND RUST UPON NORMAL WATERFOWL USE
3-REAR SAFETY WAY TOO SMALL
5-RETAY ACCUSED MYSELF OF NEGLIGENCE AND LACK OF PROPER CARE TO THE FIREARM.

Retay is looking into solving these issues I’ve experienced then I could say it’s a good Waterfowl weapon.

I LOVE MY WEATHERBY ELEMENT
$800
-ceracoate the trigger/bolt/ bolt release/lifter -five years not one issue

I’VE NEVER HAD TO CALL WEATHERBY BENELLI OR MOSSBERG OR REMINGTON OR GLOCK ETC

if anyone is having problems with their retay not cycling please check and clean your buffer spring. I looked at every forum and youtube video i found and none of them worked. I finally just gave up on it and bought a new gun, that evening i saw a video of a guy cleaning his buffer spring on some random shotgun so thats what i did. It was full of oil and gunk! After cleaning out the spring and tube it worked perfectly! it cycled everything from 3" steel shot to 1oz 2-3/4" flawlessly. I have never came back to make comments on a forum before but hopefully this will help anyone having the same issue as me.

It’s amusing watching the various YouTube carnival barking guided Duck shooters schill for outfits like Retay. Notice I said guided Duck shooters not Duck hunters.

Stick with a known quantity. Benelli, Beretta, Browning, Winchester, Remington 870’s and Mossberg Pumps.
I noticed the seasons following after the first season they all got them, not a one still shoots them or mentions them AT ALL! They've all went back to the "B" guns. That tells me all I need to know, when the money/ deal for the gun ran out so did any sort of positive lip service.

I would like to know who on youtube was shooting them and know aren't?

While looking into cutdown calls, I fell down youtube's flooded timber rabbit hole and am virtually certain 3D Productions was an example of brief association and even aired instances of a group member fighting with a Retay-decaled gun.

Didn't know it would be on the quizz, didn't book-mark it, and ain't goin' back down that path. Might have been op-error for all I know. Just recall thinking it strange they'd do so with a sponsor's gun.

I have shot a MM the last 3 seasons and can give you an honest review. It is funny on facebook how many people trash them . Then you ask and it was my uncles neighbors cousin that had one. The trasher has never even seen one or shot one. The more you ask the more you find out the trashers don't know much about shotguns. One guy said that something kept unscrewing and I told him that is strange it is soldered on. He pmed me saying he was making up stuff because he hates turkish guys.

My honest review. I have had no issues with jamming. These guns need to be broken in. I box of 3 inch shells is a good start. If you buy it and thrown in 1 oz trap loads, you will have issues with a 3.5 inch gun. Dont shoot anything under 1 1/8 oz. I oil my sparingly with synthetic mobile 1 motor oil. Learned this trick from the owner of Boss shot shells

All 5 chokes pattern great, my mod choke loosens after a couple boxes. I put a little teflon tape on threads to fix that. My only real negative thing.

Mine is cerokoated and bullet proof. It is a little heavy at 7 pounds 7 ounces. I guess that is why the recoil is very light. I dont shoot alot of 3.5 shells but they are very managable. For an interia gun very light recoil. I love the locking interia bolt. You can not get the benelli click. I have heard that benelli has offered retay millions to get their patent on the locking interia system. Seems funny if benellis are so superior.

Very easy to clean, trigger group removal is easy no pounding out pins. One thing I really love is you can take out the plug in 10 seconds. I mountain grouse hunt a ton and I take out the plug to hold more shells if I encounter a grizzly bear. My SX3 winchester is terrible to get plug out. A spring shoots out, you need to pry plastic clips. No fun and terrible design.

Two years ago I was savagely attacked by a moose while duck hunting. I was holding my shotgun like a pistol backing up poking it in the face. It was trying to kick me with its front legs and once hit my shotgun. I often wondered if it was a benelli if it would have been enough to come out of battery. If so I probably would not be writing this. As you can see in the picture my Retay saved my life. My friend is a gunsmith and he says they are a great shotgun, and I value his opinion. Briley of briley chokes use to do all of retays warranty work, I heard they got very few back for repairs.

I was just curious what type of shell you shot that moose with...did you shoot it with steel shot?

The issue I've found with these types of brands is the inconsistency of quality. Yours might be awesome, doesn't mean the next guys is. Happens less with many other manufacturers. But I shoot an O/U mostly since semi's and 3 rounds aren't that important to me and they always go boom-boom. Easy to be partial to one that saved you from getting taken out by a Moose though. 😅

@2point I took down those videos I posted. I am glad you are getting good service out of your Retay. We have enough people gunning after us, no pun intended, as it is. With the anti-2A lunatics, Communists and anti-hunters breathing down our necks at every turn, we need to be unified. My quibbles over the brand of a shotgun don’t help matters.

Three years is not a long time but I am glad you have had good luck. I grew up with a Browning Auto-5 standard 16 gauge Dad got for his wedding gift in 1957. It never jammed. One carnival barker that comes to mind is a man whose name rhymes with slobby pie. Keep us apprised. Hoping it gives the same service to you as that old Auto-5 did for us.
