Rem 97 primers

Got about 1000 of them when I bought an old man's reloading supplies in bulk. They have 209 on the box also. I was wanting to work up a 12 ga target load with Red Dot and try to use them up. I hate to see them go to waste. Does anyone have any experience using these with modern powders? Do they work about the same as the current Rem 209's. I'm looking at making a pretty light load, 16.5-17.5 grains of Red Dot, so I am not planning on going crazy.

If they're in good shape, I say yes they're safe. But if you want to make sure there had been no changes I'd suggest you contact Winchester to be sure.

ETA: From the website "Winchester Powder is now supplied by Hodgdon. For information see the Winchester Smokeless Propellants web site developed by Hodgdon (913) 362-9455"

Use rem 209 data. DO NOT use them with ball powder, only large flake powder. Ball powder (or even small flake powder) can get into the flash hole of the primer and cause some problems.

It would be fine with red dot.

Rem or AA hull
1 1/8 lead shot
18 grains red dot
WAA12 wad
medium primer (fio616, ched209, win209, rem209)
1200fps, around 10,000psi.

Rem or AA hull
1oz of shot
17 grains red dot
WAA12SL, or WAA12L wad
medium primer
1150fps and around 8,000 psi.

Make sure you test 1 primer from each box to assure they are good before loading them, also any old powder you have.

To test a primer- put it in a hull, point the barrel away from you and fire. Only do it with a single shot or a break gun... it will leave LOTS of residue in your barrel. If it goes bang its good.

To test powder- Put a small bit in a pile on concrete (outdoors!) and drop a match on it. It will ignite if its good, it will sizzle if its bad. It wont go bang, dont worry. Just keep your head back.

the 97 primer use to be used in older style rem hulls which had a smaller primer pocket.i havent seen any around in years.you could force a 209 in there primer hole but the 97 was to small to work in a regular 209 hole.i have plenty of data for them just shot me a pm and let me know what you want.

I put some together and tested them through some AA hulls with red dot. They seemed ok and they are a light target load, so I am not too worried. Only concern is if the flash hole gets clogged, but I think Red Dot is a large enough flake to prevent that. Taking a couple boxes skeet shooting this weekend and will see if there are any failures.

That is not true at all. You are thinking of the 57 primer. The 97* is the same size as the current rem STS 209
